NOTE: As of April 2017, Sacred Grove is on permanent hiatus, meaning there will not be new readings for the foreseeable future.
Sacred Grove (est. 2014), is a reading series and seminar talk series located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A play off the hallowed space that the Druids would use for rituals (Tuscaloosa is called “The Druid City” after all)—SG’s goal is to host readers, with the emphasis of uniting traveling poets & writers with those from surrounding Southern towns to perform their work. Sacred Grove, like most secretive rituals, is not on a fixed schedule & occurs irregularly—but tends to have most readings in the fall & spring (in conjunction with the "school calendar"). Sacred Grove readings are usually held at ICON, while the seminar talks are usually held on-campus in Morgan Hall (English Building @ UA). Sacred Grove always holds the goal to move towards creating a safe[r] space for a diverse group of writers and attendees.
At this time, some of the poets and writers who participate in Sacred Grove Reading Series are additionally invited to teach a one-hour master class ("Sacred Grove Seminars") at the University of Alabama on a concept or idea of their devising in exchange for an honorarium. In general, these classes are aimed at undergraduate students (and can scale for grad students) with the purpose of introducing some learning model to students and providing a chance to write or participate in some creative activity.
Past Sacred Grove Reading Series readers have included: Gina Abelkop, Adam Atkinson, Ching-In Chen, Caroline Crew, Justin Lawrence Daugherty, Shira Erlichman, Kallie Falandays, Rushelle Frazier, Gabrielle Lucille Fuentes, S. Whitney Holmes, Andy Johnson, Ashley M. Jones, Keegan Lester, Carrie Lorig, Xavier Lofton (XL), Bo McGuire, Kwoya Fagin Maples, Jamie Mortara, Sade Murphy, Angel Nafis, Jenn Marie Nunes, Brian Oliu, Douglas Piccinnini, Thibault Raoult, Anne Marie Rooney, Isabelle Shepherd, Alina Stefanescu, Janaka Stucky, Abraham Smith, Jessica Smith, Nick Sturm, Tim Jones-Yelvington, and others.
Sacred Grove was founded and is curated by JD Scott.
